This was the first project of the year. I started by pulling up pictures of famous paintings on the screen, some still lives, some abstract, and some nonrepresentational. I asked the kids if they thought all of them were art.“Is something only art if it looks like something? or if its pretty? or if you like it?” I then set out paint pallets, small amounts of acrylic paint, small paint brushes, and 2 pieces of card stock each. I instructed the kids to paint whatever they’d like, but nothing too precious, as it would be cut up later. once there was no more white showing through, the paintings were done. Before next class, I drew straight lines on the back of each paper, one horizontal and one vertical per kid. I instructed the kids to cut their paintings into strips by following the lines I had made. Next, I taped the tips of the longer strips to the tables. Then the kids took the shorter strips, coated them with a glue stick, and wove them over and under the longer strips one at a time.
