I began this project by talking about Bisa Butler and showing examples of her quilts. We talked about how she uses bright colors and patterns to create giant portraits out of fabric. We also talked about what quilting is and if we know anyone who does it. At the end of another day, I had the kids draw quick self portraits using printer paper and pencils. I scanned these drawing onto my computer. I traced the lines digitally to create a sewing pattern for each kid. I had the kids carefully cut along the lines of their printed out patterns until everything was cut out. Then I had each kid pick out a different fabric for each pattern piece they had cut out. I then quickly cut out each piece from their chosen fabrics. Once everything was cut out in fabric, I let the kids carefully pin their portraits back together. I then helped each student one on one feed their creations through my sewing machine.
